Women constitute over 10% of the Union council of ministers sworn in on Thursday. Of the six who were administered the ministerial oath, three are Cabinet ministers. The others are ministers of state.
In the outgoing council of ministers, there were six women ministers of Cabinet rank and two MoS.
The three conferred Cabinet rank on Wednesday — Nirmala Sitharaman, Harsimrat Kaur Badal and Smriti Zubin Irani — had enjoyed the same status in the first Modi Cabinet. While Sitharaman, a Rajya Sabha MP, was defence minister, Harsimrat, re-elected from Bathinda, looked after the ministry of food processing minister.
