Unesco's World Heritage Committee (WHC) has informed the Indian government that it has deferred Ahmedabad's World Heritage City nomination this year. AHMEDABAD: The quest of Ahmedabad to become India's first World Heritage City has suffered a setback. Last September, an inspection of the walled city was carried out by a member of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), Dr Adel Farhangi Shabestari, from Tehran. The WHC has said that it was not satisfied with the documentation related to the Outstanding Universal Values for Ahmedabad's walled city - referring to the urban fabric, pol culture, spaces, and buildings.A team headed by a retired Cept University professor, Rabindra Vasavada , took six years to compile the dossier for Ahmedabad's walled city, which was reviewed by the Heritage Conservation Committee of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). Originally, the nomination was to be discussed at Unesco's 41st session, to be held between July 2 and 12 in Krakow, Poland. In a detailed note, the WHC has explained to the Indian government that it found vital aspects missing or unconvincing in Ahmedabad's dossier.
