Tokyo will be introducing a four-day work week for government employees starting April 2025, in a push to boost the record-low fertility rate in Japan and support working mothers, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government announced last week.
The plan allows government employees to take three days off weekly, while another policy enables parents of young schoolchildren to leave work early in exchange for a reduced salary.
“We will review work styles with flexibility, ensuring no one has to give up their career due to life events such as childbirth or childcare,” Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike said as quoted by CNN.
