In middle of hearing a constitutional challenge to Aadhaar its mandatory linking with various services, the Supreme Court in an interim order ruled that it was not mandatory for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test or NEET. The court said that CBSE, the agency that conducts this medical entrance test, cannot make Aadhaar mandatory for students who are taking the test. The court also said that CBSE must inform people about the interim court order by uploading relevant information on its website. The court also said that Aadhaar cannot be made mandatory for similar other national exams, which are like NEET. Live Law, a website that covers legal news in India, reported that students wishing to take the tests can use "voter ID, passport, driving license, bank account book for the purpose of identification".
The order came after Attorney General KK Venugopal reportedly told the Supreme Court that the government has not asked CBSE to make Aadhaar mandatory for NEET. It is important to note that this is an interim order and things may change once Supreme Court comes out with its final verdict.
