Holding right to liberty as sacrosanct and non-negotiable which cannot be trampled on by the government by arresting a citizen without sufficient reason, the Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the immediate release of a journalist arrested by the Uttar Pradesh government for sharing a post against chief minister Yogi Adityanath on social media.
The apex court criticised the state government’s decision to arrest Delhi-based journalist Prashant Kanojia, holding it as a clear case of infringement of his liberty as the arrest was not needed for the alleged offence. The court asked the state to show “magnanimity” in releasing him.
