Vice President Hamid Ansari on Thursday accepted the resignation of Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati from the Rajya Sabha member. On Tuesday she angrily walked out of the Upper House of Parliament declaring she would quit if she was not allowed to speak on what she called frequent attacks on Dalits in Uttar Pradesh.
Her term in the Rajya Sabha was set to end next April. There is a speculation that she is likely to contest for Lok Sabha elections from Phulpur Lok Sabha, the seat currently represented by Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya. Maurya is expected to resign after Vice President polls which is scheduled be held on August 5.
