Today is World Sparrow Day, a day dedicated to raise awareness about the house sparrow and threat to their population. It is observed on March 20 every year.
When was the last time you saw those little sparrows? Ever wondered, one day we would wake up and there will be no chirping of birds outside our home? The only sound we hear of these sparrows is in the ringtone of our mobile phones. Several studies have shown that the rise in the number of cell phone towers is resulting in the decline of the bird population, especially the sparrows. Other species also impacted include butterflies, bees and wasps.
The first World Sparrow Day was celebrated in 2010 in different parts of the world. The idea was to earmark a day for the house sparrow and convey the message of their conservation and other common birds and also mark a day of celebration to appreciate the beauty of the common biodiversity which is taken for granted now.
