CJI NV Ramana has stated that the process is the punishment in India's criminal justice system. He said, "From…indiscriminate arrests, to difficulty in obtaining bail, the process leading to the prolonged incarceration of undertrials needs…attention." Referring to unlawful evictions, he said, "Without state intervention in such [cases] through legal aid, violators will never be held accountable."
