In a significant development, President Ram Nath Kovind on Tuesday (April 6) appointed Justice NV Ramana as the next Chief Justice of India, with effect from April 24, 2021. Justice Ramana is scheduled to retire on August 26, 2022. It may be recalled that in March incumbent Chief Justice of India Justice SA Bobde had recommended Justice Ramana as his successor. CJI Bobde is due to retire on April 23.
