The Odisha government banned public celebrations on Makar Sankranti and Pongal on January 14 as the state reported 7,071 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, the biggest single-day spike in over seven months. All places of worship will remain closed and congregations near water bodies to take bath have been prohibited. The government advised people to perform all rituals at home.
