Stalled by cyclone Vayu after a much-delayed onset, this year’s monsoon has been the slowest progressing monsoon in at least 12 years, show Met department records. It has reached 10-15% of the country, whereas twothirds of India is normally under the spell of monsoon by this time. The slow progress has resulted in a countrywide rainfall deficit of 44% for the season (from June 1). Monsoon now covers Kerala, parts of south Karnataka, two-thirds of Tamil Nadu and most northeast India. It is now set to advance, but IMD said the system might take up to week to gain strength.
