Tandon breathed his last on Tuesday (July 21) after a prolonged illness. He was 85. The news was confirmed by his son and UP minister Ashutosh Tandon.
Ashutosh further said that the last rites of his father will be performed this evening in Uttar Pradesh's Lucknow and in accordance with the COVID-19 guidelines. He requested everyone to pay homage to Lalji Tandon while remaining at home.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, meanwhile, took to Twitter to pay condolences to the family of Lalji Tandon.
“Shri Lalji Tandon will be remembered for his untiring efforts to serve society. He played a key role in strengthening the BJP in Uttar Pradesh. He made a mark as an effective administrator, always giving importance of public welfare. Anguished by his passing away,” tweeted the PM.
Tandon was admitted to a private hospital in Lucknow on June 13 after he complained of fever and urinary problems.
Two days later, Medanta Hospital director, Prof Rakesh Kapoor, informed that Tandon had undergone a minor surgical procedure for liver malfunction after which his condition worsened. He was put on a ventilator.
Later, Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel was given the additional charge of Madhya Pradesh in view of Tandon's poor health condition.
