The holy town of Joshimath in Uttarakhand sank 5.4 centimetres in just 12 days, according to a study by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
The National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) of ISRO has revealed satellite photographs that show the town dipped 5.4 centimetres between December 27, 2022, and January 8.
A “rapid subsidence event that was started on January 2, 2022” caused significant land subsidence or soil sinking, the study said citing eyewitnesses.
