A special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in Ahmedabad on Tuesday handed down the first conviction in the maiden case filed in India under the new and stringent anti-hijacking law by sentencing a Mumbai businessman to life in prison.
The businessman, Birju Salla, had planted a hijackthreat letter in a lavatory of a Mumbai-Delhi Jet Airways flight in 2017. He will also have to pay a fine of Rs 5 crore.
