The Gujarat government has admitted to a revised figure of 19,964 deaths due to Covid-19 towards compensation paid to the kin of victims in its submission before the Supreme Court. This is almost double the 10,099 deaths, which is the official figure. However, state government sources said the revised figure has to do with the broad definition of ‘Covid-19 deaths’ by the SC for the purpose of paying the approved Rs 50,000 compensation. It should therefore not be interpreted as fudging the original figure, sources said.
In its submission to the SC on Monday, the state government said it has paid the ex-gratia to 19,964 applicants. The state government has received 34,678 claim applications for the Rs 50,000 compensation.
