Former Union Minister and veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Jaswant Singh died on Sunday morning at a hospital in New Delhi. He was 82. Jaswant Singh, a former Army officer, had been ill after a fall at his home in August 2014 and was admitted to the Army Research and Referral Hospital. He had been in and out of the hospital since and was admitted again in June this year. "Jaswant Singh passed away at 6:55 am on Sunday. He was admitted on June 25 and was being treated for Sepsis with Multiorgan Dysfunction Syndrome," the hospital said in a statement.
After the news broke, condolences poured in from several political leaders. President Ram Nath Kovind, via his official Twitter handle, said, "The demise of veteran soldier, outstanding parliamentarian, exceptional leader and intellectual Shri Jaswant Singh is distressing. He combined many difficult roles with ease and equanimity. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends."
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Jaswant Singh served India diligently and will be remembered for his "unique perspective on matters of politics and society". The prime minister later spoke to Singh's son Manvendra to convey his condolences. "Jaswant Singh Ji will be remembered for his unique perspective on matters of politics and society. He also contributed to the strengthening of the BJP. I will always remember our interactions. Condolences to his family and supporters. Om Shanti," PM Narendra Modi tweeted.
