Gill was suffering from end stage kidney failure and heart disease, and recovering from peritonitis. The former DGP, who died in Delhi Friday age 82, shot into fame for his key, controversial role in ending terrorism in Punjab. He received Padma Shri in 1989 and wrote book: Punjab: The Knights of Falsehood in 1997. He retired from IPS in 1995.
