At least 22 people were killed, mostly in wall and house collapses, triggered by torrential rainfall pounding central Gujarat and Saurashtra on Friday that forced evacuation of at least 10,000 stranded in floods and paralysed train movement.


Eight people from Madhya Pradesh, including three children, died when a compound wall collapsed on their makeshift shelter in Morbi town that was lashed by incessant rain. The family was engaged in labour work in the ceramic and other industries in the town. Four others suffered serious injuries in the accident. In Nadiad, four persons, including a oneyear-old girl, were killed and five others injured when a threestorey building collapsed.

At least 154 people were rescued from flooded areas of Morbi, Jamnagar and Rajkot districts. Six villages of Jodiya taluka of Jamnagar were virtually turned into islands after nearly three lakh cusec water was released from Aji-4 dam. Of the 68 people stranded, 32 were airlifted by IAF choppers. In Maliya-Miyana of Morbi, 54 people stuck in chest-high water were taken out safely.
