The Election Commission of India on Thursday issued an advisory to political parties, urging transparency and accountability in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in political campaigning.
The advisory requires political parties to clearly label AI-generated or significantly altered content, such as images, videos, and audio, with notations like "AI-Generated," "Digitally Enhanced," or "Synthetic Content." Additionally, disclaimers must be included in campaign advertisements and promotional materials utilising synthetic content.
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar, addressing these concerns, remarked, “Deep fakes and misinformation have the potential to erode trust in electoral processes.” He has repeatedly cautioned against the misuse of AI and deep fake technologies, stressing the need for vigilance.
