After a crucial win in Rajya Sabha, the Modi government won a bigger victory in Lok Sabha, which approved repealing of J&K’s special status embedded in Article 370 by 351 to 72 votes. The scoreline for the bill to split J&K and Ladakh
into two Union Territories was laced with irony, reading 370-70.
Replying to the day-long debate, home minister Amit Shah said the Modi government would have no hesitation in restoring statehood to J&K when normalcy returned and also said India was not giving up its claim on Pakistan-occupied Kashmir either.
Shah said Article 370 was creating doubts over J&K’s relations with India. “This is not a historical blunder, we are rectifying the historical blunder,” he said as he disagreed with opposition parties that voiding of the provision was a huge mistake that would worsen the situation in Kashmir.
