The BJP government in Gujarat has waived the 18 per cent Goods and Services Tax (GST) that farmers who use the drip irrigation system have to pay, announcing today that the tax will be paid by a state government run Gujarat Green Revolution Company. This will cost the government 78 crores a year and will benefit lakhs of the state's farmers.
The opposition Congress has pointed out that the move comes just ahead of assembly elections, with young backward caste leader Alpesh Thakore, who joined the Congress only yesterday, tweeting, "Waiving tax for select farmers just before the elections will not work. If you have to, waive loans of 74,000 farmers in Gujarat."
