Mirabai Chanu ended India’s 22-year drought by winning gold in the weightlifting World Championships in Anaheim, California, on Wednesday. The 23-year-old from Manipur had a total lift of 194kg (snatch 85kg and 109kg in clean and jerk) to emerge triumphant in the 48kg category, becoming the second Indian after Karnam Malleswari to achieve this feat. Mirabai also bettered her personal best by two kg.
