Universities Grants Commission, UGC has issued a notice to 123 institutes including Jamia Hamdard, Punjab Engineering College and IISc Bangalore. The notice was issued on November 10 and is available on the official website of UGC along with the complete list of institutes under the scanner. This has been done in accordance to the Supreme Court's order to ban engineering degrees through correspondence. As per the notice released on ugc.ac.in, 123 institutes have been asked to refrain using the term 'university' from their name within 15 days of the notice. The institutes can, however, use the phrase 'deemed to be a university' in parenthesis. This is, as shared on the UGC notice, in accordance to the SC order of November 3 which had asked UGC to take measure of the illegal use of the word 'university' by institutes which are still deemed and not granted the status.
